In America, today is the deadline for filing your taxes with the IRS. I don’t know if there is a tax museum, but trust me, even an accountant doesn’t want to go to that shit. So the next best thing is a taxidermy museum. We’ve covered it here before many, many times…you might remember this (squirrel dioramas) or maybe that (the world’s largest collection of stuffed dogs). Well, apparently there is a dead frog circus at the Wistariahurst Museum, a historic house museum once owned by a prominent silk manufacturer and his family, in Holyoke. Over the years the museum’s most popular object has been moved around quite a bit, from prominent rooms to tucked away corners of the house…and even hidden away in storage until the public demanded it be put back on public display where it currently sits in the visitors’ center. A dead frog circus is exactly what it sounds like: a diorama of four dozen taxidermic frogs posed in a circus scene. Some drive chariots pulled by mice and rats (and some even ride an endangered spotted turtle), while others trapeze above and play music. It dates back to 1927 when it was created by naturalist Burlingham Schurr, though no one is sure why, which makes it even more intriguing. According to the curator, most visitors convince themselves that they are not real frogs, but they are real, more real than a freakin’ reality show.

THE WRITER'S TECHNIQUE IN THIRTEEN THESES :

Anyone intending to embark on a major work should be lenient with himself and, having completed a stint, deny himself nothing that will not prejudice the next.

Talk about what you have written, by all means, but do not read from it while the work is in progress. Every gratification procured in this way will slacken your tempo. If this regime is followed, the growing desire to communicate will become in the end a motor for completion.

In your working conditions avoid everyday mediocrity. Semi-relaxation, to a background of insipid sounds, is degrading. On the other hand, accompaniment by an etude or a cacophony of voices can become as significant for work as the perceptible silence of the night. If the latter sharpens the inner ear, the former acts as a touchstone for a diction ample enough to bury even the most wayward sounds.

Avoid haphazard writing materials. A pedantic adherence to certain papers, pens, inks is beneficial. No luxury, but an abundance of these utensils is indispensable.

Let no thought pass incognito, and keep your notebook as strictly as the authorities keep their register of aliens.

Keep your pen aloof from inspiration, which it will then attract with magnetic power. The more circumspectly you delay writing down an idea, the more maturely developed it will be on surrendering itself. Speech conquers thought, but writing commands it.

Never stop writing because you have run out of ideas. Literary honour requires that one break off only at an appointed moment (a mealtime, a meeting) or at the end of the work.

Fill the lacunae of inspiration by tidily copying out what is already written. Intuition will awaken in the process.

Nulla dies sine linea [‘No day without a line’] — but there may well be weeks.

Consider no work perfect over which you have not once sat from evening to broad daylight.

Do not write the conclusion of a work in your familiar study. You would not find the necessary courage there.

Stages of composition: idea — style — writing. The value of the fair copy is that in producing it you confine attention to calligraphy. The idea kills inspiration, style fetters the idea, writing pays off style.

The work is the death mask of its conception.

HULK KNOWS THAT SOMEONE IS PROBABLY GOING TO PIPE UP THAT A MARVEL CHARACTER SHOULDN’T BE TALKING ABOUT REAL LIFE TRAGEDY OR SOMETHING… THAT THINKING NOT ONLY SEEMS SMALL, BUT THE TRUTH IS HULK COULDN’T POSSIBLY CARE LESS. THERE ARE FAR MORE IMPORTANT THINGS THAN “THE APPEARANCE” OF SINCERITY. THINGS LIKE ACTUAL SINCERITY. THINGS LIKE CONTEXTUALIZATION AND PURPOSE. THINGS LIKE THE DESIRE TO COMMUNICATE SOMETHING ONE FEELS IS IMPORTANT.

AND HULK SITS HERE FEELING HOPELESSLY INADEQUATE TO DO THAT. EXCEPT TO SAY IN THESE MOMENTS THAT IT’S OKAY THAT OUR GUTS AND BONES WRESTLE WITH OUR HEARTS AND BRAINS. IT ALL COMES OUT AS ANGER AND FEAR AND INCALCULABLE SADNESS. IN THE DAYS THAT COME WE WILL HAVE THE WHOS, THE WHATS AND MAYBE EVEN SOME OF THE WHYS (THOUGH YOU CAN NEVER REALLY HAVE THEM ALL). WITH WHAT LITTLE WE KNOW AND UNDERSTAND NOW, THERE IS ONLY A SHADOW THAT HAS BEEN CAST.

THUS, THE ONLY THING HULK HOPES TO COMMUNICATE TO YOU IS THAT PATRIOTS’ DAY IS A SPECIAL THING TO THIS CITY. IT MEANT A LOT TO US. AND NOW IT SEEMS HELPLESSLY INTERTWINED WITH SOMETHING HIDEOUS. SOMETHING THAT REPRESENTS EVERYTHING THAT PATRIOTS’ DAY IS NOT. SOMETHING DARK AND VILE THAT TAPS INTO THE WORST THAT HUMANITY HAS TO OFFER.
